An Average Iraqi

An Average Iraqi is just a fictional character whose....well, fictional. I will use this character to make a comparison between him and real human beings like myself or any one else.

Location:Baghdad, Iraq

My name is Hassan Kharrufa. I am a 20 year old Iraqi student. I study civil engineering at the Department of Building and Construction at Al-Jami3a Al-Taknologia (The Tecknology Univirsity), Baghdad, Iraq.

Mr. Know it All

One of the main behaviors of the average Iraqi, is that he doesn't like to say "I dont' know"; he'll propably start talking and drift off point, sometimes it's good, but that is a rare case. Reminds me of someone but am not going to say who. For example, I walked into a store the other day to buy a certain program, so i asked the guy if he had it, from his first words i knew he had never heard of it but he wouldn't simply addmit it. So he starts piling everything he had on the desk, and when he finally couldn't find it he said "Well i guess i ran out of it", no comment.

On the other hand it is sometimes hard to get down the prone of pride escpecially if you are considerd an expert in some field and then you're asked a question that you don't have the faintest clue about, now how about THAT. An average Iraqi would have changed the subject which is a very good solution, what would you do. I'm waiting.

Well, I had a Professor in Law School. Once in a class he was giving an example of a legal rule. A student raised his hand and pointed out that his rule worked sometimes, but not in another area we studied the week before.

The Professor looked surprised for a second. You have to understand that the student was not just making a point, he was correcting the Professor in front of the whole class. But the Professor said in front of the whole class, "You are right. That's a really good point. I wish I had thought of that. But...I didn't."

He was a good and smart teacher, but the thing I still remember til today is what he said on that occasion. He could have said, "Yes, I was just about to say that." No one would ever have known what he had in his mind. Or he could have tried to argue with the student or say it wasn't important. Instead he told everybody that the point was really great and original, he wished he thought of it, but he never did.

He is an honest and honorable man of integrity. I wish there were more like him!

Good luck with your blog!

OK, here's a question, Hassan: what happens when you ask an Iraqi for directions and he doesn't know the answer?

Mrs. ?
But how many people can we know that every now and then say: 'I don't know!' Examples of -elected- politicians, UN functionaries, or let's say, Security Council responsibles are rare to non-existent. Doubts are not being represented enough. Good questions neither.
Contradictions between how secure politicians can appear in the media (where else?), and just one other look at the near outside world are big. And appearances are just most of the time not what they seem. Sometimes it starts just by questioning: I don't know?
shukran, for questioning.

Hi Hassan,

Many people are loath to admit they don't know something, especially if it's in an area they're considered an expert in. But, people like that can cause a lot of frustration (like the guy in the store for you), and can cost companies a lot of money.

In my job, I often have to hire people, and one of the things I like to do in a job interview is ask the guy some really tough technical questions just to hear him say the words "I don't know." If he's one of these types who just makes up the answer or takes a wild guess instead of admitting he doesn't know, I won't hire him.

Anyone can waffle on giving an answer, but it takes a strong and self-confident person to admit he/she doesn't know the answer.

Hey Hassan: mmm, it gives Iraq really the same looks as many other places in the world! :) and yes, i'll say it. sometimes when i don't know i can tend to bluff my way out, or in fact right into an argument as an opposite effect, because bluffing can cause tricky conclusions. but yes, i most like the questioning way. i like curiosity, i like the sort of childish feeling of continuously asking questions: why, how?

There's a joke that men hate to stop and ask directions when driving. Women on the other hand, will stop a gas service station and ask. They aren't embaressed to ask directions. This must be a male human trait. :)

Well as much as it is funny it is true, I don't remeber asking for directions much in my life, I prefer to get lost until I find something I know or don't find what I'm looking for.
